And why 2-h workshops are a waste of time to change culture.
I struggled and struggled, and struggled with Yo-Yo dieting and weight loss for years!
I would give these New Year resolutions and give myself a promise to be different this time – and nothing would change. Habits won’t change.
Yes, enthusiasm would last for a couple of weeks and I would stay on some “cutting-edge” protocol and then when the spark of enthusiasm faded so did my compliance with results fading into an indefinite future.
I used to do the same in my business.
I’d learn all these cool business concepts and fantasize about how they’d transform my business and life.
And then I would never commit to new habits and rituals. Those high aspirations get pushed to the next year while I get back to doing familiar things because it felt so much more efficient and comfortable.
Goals are skills you haven’t built yet.
Skills come from habits.
Habits are built through routines.
New goals – New routines.
Culture or abs – it’s no freaking different.
These days I ask myself every day one simple question, which I also get the most often from leaders I work with…
Focus
How do I stay focused?
Focused on my long-term goals.
Focused on my commitments when tempted to do the easy thing.
Focused on my future when distractions in the present are so much more appealing.
Environment
Put your goals on the walls.
Not for the magic of manifestation but to remind your 🧠 brain.
Write down what’s important, why it matters, and the pain you’ll face if you don’t achieve it.
Our brains are easily distracted, forgetful and present-biased—visual cues keep the future front and center.
Rituals
Here’s a new ritual I’m adopting for 2025, inspired by Marshall Goldsmith , the #1 executive coach who works with CEOs of global companies:
Grade yourself daily on a set of questions.
It’s a simple way to track your progress and keep yourself accountable.
This works even better when you share it with a coach, an accountability partner, or a team.
The Secret Sauce✨
There’s no magic to staying focused.
Just a couple of things most people skip:
- Set your environment up for success. Make your goals visible.
- Rituals for accountability. A small daily check-in makes a big difference over time.
- Do the habits that create the version of you that deserves your goals. You can’t win championships without daily workout.
Are you working on any long-term project in 2025 that’s way overdue?
Visualize, Ritualize to Realize.
A 2-hour workshop unsupported by any new system is a waste of everyone’s time and money.
